Every holiday trip is a headache. The places I want to go are often crowded, and I don't want to go to crowded places. It's also difficult to buy tickets for various modes of transportation. This time, visiting Wuzhen was a lucky find. Even during the New Year, it wasn't too crowded, but it wasn't deserted either. It was just right.
Although I have lived in Zhejiang for many years and am familiar with the cuisine, accents, and scenery, Wuzhen still gave me a different atmosphere.
Xizha Scenic Area#
Wuzhen Scenic Area is centrally managed. The prices of goods in the scenic area are clearly marked, and accommodations are arranged and allocated by the scenic area. As for food, you can choose to experience local cuisine. Each place has a different taste.
Accommodation and Food#
For cost-effectiveness reasons, we chose to stay outside the scenic area. Even during the New Year, the prices were not too expensive, but the hot water was not very strong, which was a bit disappointing.
About food:
-
On the first day, we randomly found a homestay in the Wuzhen scenic area to try local cuisine. The hostess was very enthusiastic, and it was a rare authentic dining experience in a true homestay. However, the dishes were honestly just homemade dishes, so there's no need to be too demanding.
-
On the second day, we chose a restaurant recommended by the hotel owner. We ordered some of the more unique dishes in Wuzhen, such as oil-burst shrimp and sauce duck. The taste was good and worth a try.
Old Street#
After dinner, we planned to stroll around the outskirts of Dongzha. There were often elderly people riding tricycles asking if we wanted to go to the old street. I searched on Xiaohongshu (a social media platform) and found that some people looked down on the old street, but since we had nowhere else to go, we chose to walk there. The journey was not far, and we arrived in about 10 minutes.
The "old" in the old street is truly reflected here. The roads are narrow and built along the river, with various businesses on both sides. But I think it's worth a visit. In Xizha Scenic Area, you can appreciate the beautiful scenery of the water town, while in the old street, you can have more cultural experiences, although commercialization is more serious here.
Strolling#
There is only one road in the old street, so once you walk to the end, that's it. Since we had nowhere else to go, we chose to walk on the street and experience the local life.
Conclusion#
In terms of time arrangement, two days and one night in Wuzhen is enough. We even had time to leave the scenic area and take a walk in the warm winter sun, experiencing the local residents' way of life. This is completely different from the usual experience of being a tourist.
Indeed, there are many choices for surrounding areas to visit, but Wuzhen, which is not too popular but can provide a unique experience, is worth a try.
